Airport security technician arrested for DUI

Key West International Airport Security Technician Robert Guy Patterson, 63, was arrested for DUI Tuesday by the Key West Police Department.

According to a Key West Police report, Patterson was stopped on a scooter near White and Eaton streets at approximately 7 p.m. for failure to come to a full stop at a stop sign and swerving.

Airport Security Technicians (ASTs) are civilian members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. They do not carry firearms or Tasers and do not have the authority to make arrests. ASTs assist Sheriff’s Office Deputies and provide security at Key West International Airport.

The Sheriff’s Office is conducting an Internal Affairs investigation regarding the incident.

Patterson was hired on May 23, 2013.

Man arrested for sexual battery

A 51-year-old Estero, Florida man was arrested Tuesday for sexually abusing a girl.

Shawn Robert Chapman was charged with sexually assaulting the then 13-year-old girl in July 2023 in Islamorada.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Detectives worked with Lee County Sheriff’s Office Detectives on the case.

A warrant was obtained for Chapman’s arrest and he was booked into Monroe County jail on Tuesday.

Two people arrested on drug charges

Two Miami, Florida people were arrested on drug charges Wednesday following an Upper Keys traffic stop.

Aixa Garate, 27, was charged with possession of methamphetamine (.38 grams), possession of synthetic THC (vape pen with cartridge), possession of marijuana (2.24 grams), and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Santiago Londono, 28, was charged with not having a driver’s license, possession of methamphetamine (2.6 grams), and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Sheriff’s Office stopped a Toyota sedan on U.S. 1 near Mile Marker 104 after records showed the owner had no driver’s license for prior suspensions due to failure to pay traffic fines. There was an odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. The narcotics were found during a subsequent search.

Both Garate and Londono were taken to jail.
