Body found on Wisteria Island identified

The body found on Wisteria Island at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 25, 2022, has been identified as 67-year-old Wayne Carter Sherman.

Sherman lived on a nearby sailboat.

He was found by passersby who notified the U.S. Coast Guard, who in turn notified the Sheriff’s Office.

There were no obvious signs of foul play.

Autopsy results are pending.

Woman arrested for DUI after striking bicyclist

A 36-year-old Marathon woman was arrested Wednesday after striking a bicyclist.

There were no life-threatening injuries reported.

Carolyn Rebecca Hamm was charged with DUI, DUI with injuries, hit and run, and driving with a suspended license.

Hamm was southbound in a Dodge truck on U.S. 1 near Mile Marker 87 when she struck a 59-year-old male bicyclist at approximately 3:53 a.m. Hamm’s vehicle dragged the victim for several feet.

The Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop the suspect vehicle near Long Key State Park, but Hamm accelerated before stopping near Mile Marker 62.

Hamm was taken to jail.
