WIC stand for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC is a federally funded nutrition program for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, women who have just had a baby, and infant and children up to age 5. WIC provides the following at no cost: healthy foods, nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding support, and referrals for health care and community services.

WIC foods include milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt, cereal, juice, whole grains, beans, peanut butter, fruits, vegetables, baby food, and baby formula. Food benefits vary depending on age and breastfeeding status. Nutritional counseling is provided by registered dietitians. Breastfeeding support and counseling are provided by peer counselors and designated breastfeeding experts.

To receive WIC in Florida, clients must live in Florida, meet certain income levels, and have certain nutritional needs. In Monroe County, WIC food benefits can be redeemed at Publix and Winn Dixie.
