Innovative Solar Technology Exceeds Five-Year Power Goal

Project generates clean power and demonstrates renewable technology to the public

A demonstration of innovative solar technology exceeded its five-year goal for power production, while educating the public about solar technology and the environment.

The 26 kilowatt (AC) solar photovoltaic installation is a joint project of the Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA), Keys Energy Services (KEYS) and NOAA’s Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Since its dedication in 2010, the project has exceeded projected output by 3.5%, generating more than 235,000 kWh and offsetting more than 370,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, equivalent to eliminating more than 4 million 60-watt light bulbs or more than 19,000 gallons of gasoline.

The project uses a “peel and stick” solar technology that generates electricity with an innovative thin-film solar panel mounted to a rooftop using an adhesive material. The technology was selected as the best match for the Florida Keys’ unique environmental conditions, for its ability to capture the complete solar spectrum more efficiently and for its ability to generate in low-light conditions.

The solar installation is located at the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center and includes an informational kiosk that educates visitors about climate change, energy conservation and solar power generation. The kiosk features an interactive display that shows the solar installation’s electrical output and environmental offsets in real time. The real-time monitoring system also can be viewed online at http://www.keysecosolar.com.

“With five years of reliable operation, this project is a success in its dual mission of power generation and education,” said FMPA General Manager and CEO Nicholas P. Guarriello. “Demonstration projects like this move us closer to a future when renewables become cost-effective and a greater part of the power mix.”

“All KEYS renewable projects have incorporated an educational component so customers are able to view the output of the unit on-demand. Our customers can log on to www.KeysEnergy.com/renewable-energy to access all of our projects and review their output,” said Lynne Tejeda, KEYS’ General Manager & CEO.
