The beautiful duo of art and nature can be found and explored at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, where visitors can discover 27 different creations of work by 19 local and non-local artists within the 15-acre habitat’s rare and indigenous plants and trees. The current exhibition is present until July 31st, and features large outdoor pieces that are created from repurposed materials. As said on their website, keywest.garden, “These works feature earth-friendly themes, including recycled and natural materials. Sculptures by local artists accent the natural beauty of the conservation site on Stock Island.” The exhibition is funded by Opal Key Resort & Marina, The State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Tourist Development Council.
Having been established in 2010, the annual Art in the Garden has proved to be a hit amongst visitors, peaking the interest of people from all different demographics. The pieces are installed among the property’s trails, boardwalks, and hidden glades. The natural themes and materials within the artworks harmonize with and compliment the surrounding nature that frames each piece. According to Misha McRAE, Executive Director of the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, “These works are outstanding and unique, made exclusively from repurposed materials. We are trying to promote the message that less belongs in the dump, and there are more ways to use what we have created already.” This idea is seamlessly translated by artists throughout the exhibition.
Each artist, prior to creation and installation, is invited to scope out the property and select which area inspires them. After a walkthrough, the artists return with their application, as well as their desired location, and concept for their potential piece. McRAE says, “Each piece is different and individually created from the vision of the artist.” The unique atmosphere of an outdoor, open-air, “living museum” makes for a special experience for nature and art lovers alike. Not only does the art garden provide visitors with delightful surprises as they explore the grounds, but the artists involved are able to gain traction and even sell their work, with a portion donated back to the garden.
The Key West Art Garden runs every year, with preparation by the art committee members of the botanical garden beginning in January. The current exhibition is open to the public from 10 AM- 4 PM until July 31st, be sure not to miss it!
There is no fee for applicants, so if you’re interested but missed your chance this year, be sure to apply for the 13th one, in April of 2023! For more information about past, present, and upcoming exhibitions, or just the location (which is a must see), head to keywest.garden
