County Officials Meet With Senators & Representatives in Washington, D.C. to Discuss Florida Keys Initiatives
MONROE COUNTY, FL – The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners approved the 2023 Federal Legislative agenda last week. This week, Commissioners Michelle Coldiron and Jim Scholl joined Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi and Monroe County Legislative Affairs Director Lisa Tennyson in Washington, D.C.
On Wednesday, Monroe County discussed its federal legislative priorities with U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez, Sen. Marco Rubio, and Sen. Rick Scott. County priorities include flood insurance initiatives, infrastructure and resilience projects, water quality and coral restoration plans, marine debris removal after hurricanes, and earmark appropriations. They also met with Florida’s Chief Resilience Officer, Wes Brooks to discuss resilience funding and coral reef protection.
On Thursday, Monroe County held meetings to push for the passage of the Restoring Resilient Reefs Act that included officials from Martin and Broward counties. Meetings were held with various members of the Florida delegation and the House and Senate committees helping to shepherd the bill through its passage. The bill will send significant new funding for coral reef protection and bolster the role of states and local governments in restoration and protection initiatives.
