Man arrested for impersonating a lawyer in theft case

A 63-year-old Marathon man was arrested Monday for taking thousands of dollars from a woman.

Orlando Gonzalez was charged with fraud-impersonating a lawyer and larceny.

The victim notified the Sheriff’s Office on June 22, 2021. The victim stated she paid Gonzalez $6,000 for legal services. Those legal services were to start travel paperwork to Columbia as well as work to bring the victim’s mother in Cuba to the United States.

The victim called Gonzalez to discuss a letter she received from the U.S. government stating the legal paperwork was incomplete. She requested her money back. Gonzalez refused and blocked her calls on his cell phone.

A check with the Florida Bar showed Gonzalez was not a current or former lawyer eligible to practice law. Other records checks show he was formerly convicted of fraud and carrying a concealed weapon.

Gonzalez had not paid the victim back as of February.

Warrants were issued for his arrest and he was booked into jail on Monday.

Man arrested for stealing lawn equipment

A 30-year-old Key Largo man was arrested Monday for stealing $3,000 worth of lawn maintenance equipment from a lawn care company.

Fernando Alberto Rivas-Carcamo was charged with burglary and grand theft.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified on Jan. 1, 2022 of a burglary at a Key Largo landscaping company in which $3,000 worth of chain saws, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers and similar equipment had been stolen from company trailers. The owner and several employees stated Rivas-Carcamo was recently fired and had knowledge of the company’s security codes and key lock boxes.

An employee also stated Rivas-Carcamo asked him whether the security cameras work at the property. Phone records corroborated that as well as confirmed Rivas-Carcamo was in the area at the time of the theft.

Warrants were issued for Rivas-Carcamo upon further investigation.

Rivas-Carcamo was booked into jail on Monday.
