Hunger and Homeless Awareness
During Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission proclaimed National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week.
This annual observation comes as many prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, while so many in the community struggle with job loss, loss of homes, and hunger.
“As we near Thanksgiving, we look at the abundance in our own families and our own lives,” said Diana Flenard, Chair of the Monroe County Coalition of Continuous Care, “and we realize that many in our community are just one paycheck away from being homeless or not being able to feed their families.”
She thanked the 31 agencies that make up the coalition for their continuous hard work to help those in need.

For the past 30 years the National Coalition for the Homeless and National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness have sponsored National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week to help to educate the public about the many reasons people are hungry and homeless including the shortage of affordable housing in the City of Key West, especially for very low-income residents.
The proclamation also encourages support of homelessness assistance service providers as well as community service opportunities for students and school service organizations.
