Couple arrested after attacking two Deputies

A Homestead couple was arrested Saturday after attacking two Deputies at an Islamorada restaurant.

Floyd Angus Leach, 52, and Rebecca Leach, 48, were both charged with two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer.

The melee began when Detective Ignacio Molina and Deputy Amie Szymanski went to break up a 1 a.m. fight at the Hog Heaven Sports Bar & Grill.

One the men involved in the fight, Floyd Leach, grabbed Detective Molina from behind and placed him in a choke hold. Floyd Leach then began striking Detective Molina in the face. Detective Molina took Floyd Leach to the ground.

Detective Molina and Deputy Szymanski were placing Floyd Leach in handcuffs when Rebecca Leach kicked Deputy Szymanski in the head and kicked Detective Molina in the hand.

Detective Molina and Deputy Szymanski then placed Rebecca Leach in custody.

Detective Molina suffered bruises to his face. There were no other injuries reported.

Floyd and Rebecca Leach were taken to jail.

Man recently released from jail for stealing vehicle, back in jail for second car theft   

A 20-year-old Homestead, Florida man arrested Thursday in the Upper Keys for stealing a Honda was back in jail Saturday for stealing a car in Key West.

Jose Carlos Blanquicett now faces two charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle in addition to larceny, burglary and fleeing and eluding. He also faces some marijuana charges from the first arrest on Thursday.

Blanquicett was released from jail at 5:25 p.m. Friday on non-monetary pretrial release regarding the Thursday arrest, meaning Blanquicett did not have to post bail in the first arrest, but the judge ordered him to follow other conditions pending trial such as not being arrested again.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified at 1 a.m. Saturday by the Key West Police Department of a stolen black Infiniti two-door. Deputy Anthony Buscemi spotted the car at Mile Marker 27 and attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the Infiniti did not stop.

Deputy Buscemi reported the car was going over the double yellow lines and speeding 80 mph in a 45 mph zone. The Infiniti pulled onto Pirates Road on Little Torch Key. Deputy Buscemi noted the car was still hot. The car keys were located.

Blanquicett was also located nearby. He was the only person in the area. The businesses were closed.

The car information was passed on to Key West Police and they confirmed the Infiniti was the stolen car.

Blanquicett was taken back to jail where he remained Sunday with $320,000 bail.

Marijuana bale found by anglers  

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on North Coconut Palm Boulevard in Islamorada Saturday morning regarding drugs found at sea.

Deputy Christopher Kilmurray arrived to find two men who stated the found the marijuana bale while fishing about a half mile from the Islamorada hump.

Deputy Kilmurray inspected the bale and it appeared to contain marijuana.

The bale was turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.
