MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA FEATURED IN THIS WEEK’S CDC MMWR

(Monroe County, Fla.)  This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention features in their latest MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) a publication about the May 2019 Community Assessment for Mental and Physical Health Effects After Hurricane Irma, Florida Keys.

The report details the results of the door-to-door modified Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) to calculate population estimates of suicide risk in Monroe County.  The estimated suicide risk was 7 percent. During the 20 months after Hurricane Irma, Florida Keys residents reported worsening of anxiety (17 percent) and depression (11 percent) and a need for mental health services (17%).
