Tennessee Williams Museum Sets Reopening for June 17
As was the case with most public spaces, the Tennessee Williams Museum made the decision to close its doors to the public in March of 2020 as COVID-19 cases continued to rise. The museum’s building has remained closed since, offering online programming and limited private tours during this year’s Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration. After what will be a fifteen-plus month closure, the Tennessee Williams Museum has announced that it will reopen to the public on Thursday, June 17, 2021.
Tennessee Williams is celebrated as one of the greatest 20th century American playwrights. His works such as “The Glass Menagerie,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and many others are classics of the American stage that earned him two Pulitzer Prizes, Tony Awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as several other literary awards.
Visitors are invited to tour the educational museum where they can enjoy and learn about many of Williams’ literary accomplishments and about his life in Key West. The museum houses an extensive collection of photographs, first edition plays and books, rare newspaper and magazine articles, videos, a typewriter used by the author while writing in Key West amongst other artifacts.
In its initial phase, the museum will be open to the public Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in order to manage capacity and prioritize safety. “We are excited to reopen the Tennessee Williams Museum building and welcome visitors from all over the country back into our educational facility to learn about our famous Key West resident,” the museum’s curator Dennis Beaver said in a statement. “It is a big step forward to open the doors to our community that has done so much to help sustain the museum during this challenging time.”
The Tennessee Williams Museum is located at 513 Truman Avenue. Guests may go online to www.kwahs.org/museums to purchase tickets in advance of their visit. For more information about the museum, visit www.kwahs.org. Your museums. Your community. It takes an island.
