Governor Announces Funding for Keys

The City of Key West will be receiving nearly $5 million for wastewater and stormwater infrastructure improvements, Governor Ron DeSantis announced today during a press conference in Key Largo.

Making the announcement at the Murray Nelson Government Center, Gov. DeSantis noted that Monroe County will receive an overall $16.7 million through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s Rebuild Florida program for a variety of projects.

He said that $1.3 million will be earmarked for stormwater surge protection for vulnerable homes in Key Largo. Another $10.4 million will be provided to Monroe County to harden against sea level rise, according to the governor. And $4.9 million will support the numerous stormwater projects in Key West aimed at improving drainage and countering the effects of sea level rise.

“Florida communities are still recovering from the impacts of Hurricane Irma, and helping them rebuild remains a top priority,” said Governor DeSantis in a statement released this afternoon. “This funding will not only help to ensure Hurricane Irma-impacted communities are restored but also help improve their resiliency against future events.”

The funds are allocated through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program.
