Pavement Sealant Saves Streets

Many streets throughout Key West will now have a longer, smoother life following this week’s sealing project. Although there was little traffic impact, the signs and prep had many residents wondering what was up.

The City was able to piggyback a project with the county, saving substantial dollars. Sealant now protects parts of Reynolds Street, Southard, 5th Street, 8th and 11th Streets, United Street from White to Grinnell, Windsor Lane, several sections of White Street, part of Whitehead Street and Grinnell. Duck Avenue was also sealed in late November.

For under $50,000 the City was able to significantly enhance the longevity of these streets, protecting the pavement from sun, salt and wear. According to Engineering Director Steven McAlearney, sealant is only effective on recently-paved streets, thus the choice of streets. McAlearney says, if the funding is available, future projects like Duval and Simonton might also be sealed.

These projects are part of the City’s ongoing effort to pave roads throughout the island.
