Keys History & Discovery Center Presents…History of Lignumvitae Key
Presentation Includes Efforts to Develop the Island
Keys History & Discovery Center Presents…History of Lignumvitae Key: Story of a Tree & Real Estate Speculation, a live virtual lecture on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 6-7 p.m., presented by Peter Jutro, Ph.D., Cornell University.
Join Dr. Jutro as he talks about Lignumvitae Key, an island whose early history is shrouded in mystery. He will discuss the Lignumvitae tree, after which the island was named, and which was once extensively exploited for a fascinating medicinal purpose. It is also an island that remained undeveloped despite repeated efforts, particularly by an owner who was also a successful real estate speculator.
Hear about the work of the island’s caretakers from the mid-1950s through the early 1990s, Russ and Charlotte Niedhauk, as well as that of the wealthy Florida patrician and conservationist Nathaniel Reed, who also fought to save it from development, leading to the State of Florida taking ownership.
The lecture is free for members and $5 for non-members. Advance registration is required at www.keyslectures.com/lectures. This virtual program utilizes GoToWebinar.
