RESCUE TAIL / “Fostering was the best part of 2020”
By Tara McFarland
Transitioning to working from home was difficult for many of us. The concept of working from home sounded great, sleeping in, no commute, even wearing our pajamas while we sauntered from our bedroom to the kitchen table and simply turned on the computer. Over time the routine became arduous as some realized that working from home meant having far more time on their hands than expected. For many, having the extra time meant trying something new, finding a new hobby, completing the laundry list of projects, or being willing to open their home to a foster pet from our shelters.
Kevin was working from home, and with the newly-discovered free time, was interested in helping a shelter animal in need. When he arrived at our Marathon Campus to meet Mike, our initial concern over his lack of experience waned as we witnessed how compassionate and caring he was with the dog. He was gentle, kind and receptive to the behavioral issues that stemmed from Mike having been neglected and abandoned. Although Kevin had never worked through trauma with an animal before, he was as an educator himself, willing to learn and provide the love and patience Mike needed to heal.
In Kevin’s care, Mike blossomed over time into a happy, trusting loving dog. When it came time to welcome our foster animals back, the bond that Kevin developed with Mike could not be broken and his foster dog became his furever dog. Following his official adoption, Kevin sent us the most wonderful update.
“I wanted to let you know that he has come a long way. His separation issues have gone away to the point he no longer howls when I leave him at home. He reminds me when I’m working from home when it’s time to give him attention. I think he knew this was going to be his furever home before I did. He has been a wonderful companion. He loves going for walks and frequently stops in his favorite spot in the shade near a fire hydrant. Recently, thanks to his new car seat, he enjoys car rides as well. He has also claimed a spot on the back of the couch and loves looking out the window between naps. There is no way I could have sent him back knowing his history and seeing how content he is with me in my home. We have become best buddies. The best decision so far of 2020 was taking him in as a foster dog and now adopting him. Thank you for all you do!”
