Man arrested for marijuana possession

A 50-year-old Miramar, Florida man was arrested Thursday night after a traffic stop yielded about an ounce and a half of marijuana.

Richard Willis Alford was charged with possession of marijuana.

Traffic Enforcement Unit Deputy Shaun Lones stopped a southbound Chevrolet sport utility vehicle in Marathon on U.S. 1 with broken utility trailer lights and an unreadable tag at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Deputy Lones detected the overwhelming odor of marijuana emitting from the SUV. There were four people in the SUV. Alford was a rear passenger. Deputy Lones asked if anyone in the vehicle had medical marijuana cards. The driver and another passenger provided medical marijuana cards.

In total: Deputy Lones found four glass mason jars and a Ziploc bag containing marijuana. None of the marijuana mason jars or Ziploc bag had any documentation showing that it had been prescribed by a doctor.

Alford claimed ownership of the marijuana in the Ziploc bag and two of the four mason jars, which totaled an approximate 1.5 ounces.

Alford’s marijuana was placed into evidence. The other marijuana from the remaining mason jars was seized for destruction.

Alford was taken to jail, the other three in the SUV were released from the scene.
