Key West Art Center & Gallery grants $1,000 scholarship to local student artist

Some years ago Key West Art Center & Gallery established a scholarship in honor of Martha Watson Sauer, a WPA artist and early member of the Art Center who arrived in Key West during the Great Depression at the age of 24 and stayed to make it the home that she returned to from travels around the world until her passing in 2005.

We are happy to announce that the 2020 recipient of the Martha Watson Sauer scholarship is Key West High School student Andreya Ramos.   Congratulations to Andreya and best wishes in her pursuit of her artistic career.

The $1,000 scholarship is intended for a serious high school student who wishes to pursue an advanced degree in studio art and exhibits Martha’s adventurous spirit, her powers of observation, her boundless curiosity about the world, and her dedication to the practice of making art.   A permanent exhibit about the artist’s life and work is on display at the Key West Art Center, and a portion of the proceeds from sales of her paintings, benefits the scholarship.

Each school year applications are available through the Art Department at Key West High School or on-line at www.keywestartcenter.com. The Key West Art Center & Gallery is a non-profit community art gallery located at 301 Front Street and open every day from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Call 305-294-1241 for more information.
