Man arrested in $9K scam of elderly woman

A 33-year-old Key Largo man was arrested Friday for his role in scam that cost a 95-year-old woman $9,000.

Raul Eberto Fabre Reyes was charged with larceny from a victim 65-years-old or older.

The case is still under investigation and more arrests or charges may be pending.

Deputy Andersen Harrill spoke to a resident at 5 p.m. Friday who told him her mother had $9,000 taken from her earlier that day. The woman stated her mother lives with her caretakers in Key Largo. The victim’s daughter stated her mother received a phone call she believed to be from her grandson. The “grandson” stated he was in trouble. The “grandson” said he needed to the money to post bail and get out of jail.

The caretaker drove the victim to a bank in Key Largo whereupon the victim withdrew the requested $9,000. The caretaker stated the victim gave the man $9,000.

Deputy Harrill spoke to the victim’s caretaker. The caretaker stated the victim informed her she needed to be driven to her bank. The caretaker stated they arrived at the bank and the victim withdrew $9,000. The caretaker said they then met a man the caretaker did not recognize. The victim handed the man $9,000. The caretaker asked to see the man’s identification. The caretaker also took down the license plate number of the SUV the man was driving. The license plate came back to Fabre Reyes.

Detective Ian Barnett was assigned to investigate. Fabre Reyes claimed he works for a ride-sharing app and that he was the driver who picked up the envelope and gave it to someone else.

Warrants were issued for Fabre Reye’s arrest.

Fabre Reye was subsequently booked into jail, but the case remains ongoing.
