Man arrested for aggravated assault

A 66-year-old Big Coppitt man claiming to be worried about the COVID-19 virus was arrested Thursday night after threatening to kill roommates for bringing their children on the property.

Edwin Paul Dalton was charged with aggravated assault.

There were no reported injuries.

Multiple Deputies were called to the 20 block of Flipper Road at 8:40 p.m. where they found several people (victims) in the street pointing at Dalton in a nearby carport/garage. Dalton was wearing a holster that contained a loaded Smith & Wesson .357 revolver. The weapon was holstered and Dalton was not holding the weapon, however Dalton was detained at that time.

Dalton stated he was upset when he saw several children — teenagers — in his home. Deputies learned a couple Dalton is allowing to live on his property brought their grandchildren and several of their grandchildren’s friends over to the property and this upset Dalton. Dalton stated they were putting his life in danger, so he retrieved his revolver as well as a small bat to confront them.

Dalton stated he attempted to throw everyone off the property, but his story changed several times. Eventually, he showed Deputy Brandon White a text message he sent to a friend. Dalton’s text message clearly stated that he “might have to kill someone,” and asked the friend to come over and help.

Dalton also admitted to drinking alcohol that night.

Dalton was taken to jail.
