Man arrested in stolen vehicle

A 45-year-old Miami was arrested in Islamorada Saturday morning after he was found in sleeping in a stolen pickup truck with needles and steroids.

Juan Gonzalez was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, larceny, possession of prescribed drugs without a prescription and possession of paraphernalia.

Sgt. Nicholas Whiteman was on patrol in at 11:10 a.m. at Mile Marker 78.5 at Indian Key Fill when he saw a white Ford pickup truck parked in a no parking zone. The back window of the truck was smashed out. A sole occupant, later identified as Gonzalez, was found asleep in the back seat of the truck.

The truck was confirmed stolen by Fort Lauderdale Police in September 2019 and the license plate on the truck was reported stolen out of Brevard County, Florida earlier this month. The ignition of the truck was punched out by a flat head screwdriver. A screwdriver was found on the floorboard of the driver’s side. This is a common method of starting a stolen vehicle. Gonzalez admitted to using the screwdriver to start the truck.

Sgt. Whiteman found a small vial containing a liquid labeled Testosterone Cypionate, an anabolic steroid. The vial had labeling that stated it was not to be legally dispensed without a prescription. Gonzalez did not have a prescription. Sgt. Whiteman also found 18 syringes in the truck.

Gonzalez admitted to possessing the vial and needles, stating he injects the testosterone into his buttocks.

Gonzalez was taken to jail.
