Man arrested in DUI/hit-and-run case

A 63-year-old Hyannis, Massachusetts man was arrested Saturday after fleeing from a crash in a stolen car.

Christopher E. Geary was charged with hit-and-run, third DUI in 10 years, DUI with property damage, DUI with .15 blood alcohol content or higher, driving with erroneous tags, driving with no driver’s license, knowingly driving on a revoked driver’s license and grand theft of a motor vehicle.

There were no major injuries reported.

The driver of a Cadillac Escalade told Upper Keys Deputy Edward Swogger at approximately 4 p.m. that he was rear-ended on U.S. 1 by a green Toyota Corolla while sitting at a red light near the Plantation Key Boat Mart & Marina. The victim stated he pulled over and told the Toyota Corolla driver they needed to file a police report. The victim stated the driver of the Corolla, later identified as Geary, then fled the scene. The victim followed Geary behind a restaurant on the 90000 block of the Overseas Highway when Geary then fled the scene on foot.

Multiple other Deputies arrived and found Geary near Gardenia Street and Royal Poinciana Boulevard. Geary appeared to be intoxicated. Five empty beer cans, four empty bottles of brandy, five empty bottles of vodka and three empty bottles of malt liquor were found in the Toyota Corolla, which was later found to be reported stolen out of Massachusetts.

Geary was taken to jail.
