Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg, during an awards ceremony Friday, named Officer Brian Leahy as Officer of the Year for 2019 as well as Officer of the Second Quarter.
Officer Leahy joined the Key West Police Department in 2006, the culmination of an entire career as a first responder. He has served as a Special Investigations Unit Detective, a field training officer, a member of the Special Response Team, and a patrol officer. He is recognized by his peers as a dedicated and proactive patrolman as well as an outstanding investigator. He is relied upon as a mentor and as a leader of his shift.
“Officer Leahy’s professional dedication has provided vital intelligence regarding motorcycle gangs as well as drug informants,” said Chief Brandenburg. “His efforts have led to important arrests that have protected and improved the community. This year, Officer Leahy’s cultivation of numerous drug informants led to one of the largest methamphetamine seizures in local history.”
Brandenburg added that “Officer Leahy conducts himself every day with enthusiasm, passion, pride and compassion. On his own time, he volunteers at law enforcement functions and represents the Department by networking with other agencies.”
The award is sponsored by Keys Federal Credit Union. Marketing Director Marylou Carn was on hand to present officer Leahy a check for $500 in recognition of his outstanding service.
