Generator Technician Craig Smith Announced as Monroe County Employee of the Third Quarter

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County Generator Technician Craig Smith was announced as the Monroe County Employee of the Third Quarter for his dedicated service during the threat of Hurricane Dorian in September.

“Before, during, and after hurricanes, Craig works out of the Marathon garage and Emergency Operation Center repairing and refueling generators, fixing flat tires, keeping vehicles running, and helping anyone in need,” said Roy Sanchez, Director of Fleet Management, who nominated Smith for the honor.

During the threat of Hurricane Dorian, lighting created a power surge that caused a fuel pump malfunction to the Marathon system. While being briefed of the issue, Assistant County Administrator Kevin Wilson learned someone (Smith) in Fleet Management had already located and arranged for express delivery of the parts. They were delivered and installed on a Saturday by 9 a.m. eliminating the need for a mission request with the State of Florida to set up a mobile refueling station due to the hurricane.

“Luckily, it wasn’t needed, and as soon as the parts arrived, the fuel system was repaired and operational,” said Wilson. “The bottom line is Craig shows the kind of initiative that the employee service award is designated to recognize.”

In addition, Smith took charge in implementing a special maintenance and monitoring program specifically designed to assure Monroe County’s Bayshore Manor residents have an emergency generator, emergency power, and sufficient fuel reserves available in order to keep indoor temperatures safe at all times. He also routinely ensures County and Sheriff communication towers have backup power when needed.
