Letter to the Editor / THIS AND FUTURE PRESIDENTS
By Roger C. Kostmayer
What happens this and following weeks could determine how much democracy our country will have in the future.
Every president and congressman swears an oath of office that is, essentially, his or her job description. It is to faithfully execute the laws and preserve, protect and support the Constitution – the core principles and laws of our nation. The Constitution transcends politics and self interest and the impeachment process is to determine if the President has done something for which the Constitution requires removal from office.
Article II Section 4 of the Constitution is one sentence and it lists the three specific offenses by presidents that require removal from office: “Conviction of Treason, BRIBERY or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” The House must impeach (charge and indict), the Senate must convict by a two-thirds vote, and the President “Shall be removed” from office.
The charge against this President will most likely be that he committed BRIBERY and ABUSE OF POWER. The facts and evidence, most of which are already public, will show the Congress passed and the President signed a law giving our ally Ukraine hundreds of millions of dollars worth of military weapons & training support to help in their hot war against Russian invaders. Witnesses will report, under oath, that the President and his henchmen deliberately stopped the funds unless and until the Ukraine President publicly announced he was investigating and looking for corruption about an American political adversary of Trump’s. In other words, to force Ukraine to interfere in an American election.
If the facts, evidence and public testimony persuade the American people, and two-thirds of their Senators, that the 45th President attempted BRIBERY of a foreign government to benefit himself and not the country, then the rule of law will be reaffirmed and Americans will be reassured that no one, neither this President nor future ones, can be above the law.
It’s not just Senators who must make an honest decision. Everyone of us has a responsibility to our country and its citizens to listen and make fair, objective and thoughtful evaluations of the hearings, and then determine if our Constitution is being faithfully followed.
