Woman charged for fleeing from Deputy

A 31-year-old Homestead woman was arrested Sunday for fleeing from a Deputy on U.S. 1.

Tikieria Shawntay Ashley was charged with fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest.

Deputy Frank Westerbrand was on patrol on the Seven Mile Bridge at Mile Marker 41 and 12:22 p.m. when he saw a southbound Toyota Scion with tinting on the side windows and rear window so dark that he could not see inside the vehicle. Deputy Westerbrand activated his lights and siren and attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the suspect vehicle accelerated, passing  another vehicle.

The suspect vehicle did a U-turn at Mile Marker 39, but as it headed northbound, it stayed in the southbound lane. The vehicle finally stopped on the bridge just north of Sunshine Key on the southbound shoulder facing northbound. A U.S. Border Patrol Agent arrived and helped Deputy Westerbrand order the driver, later identified as Ashley, out of the car at gunpoint as well as a 42-year-old male passenger. The passenger was not charged in the incident.

Ashley made multiple conflicting statements as to why she was driving as described. She initially stated she was having a medical emergency, then stated she was afraid to stop out of fear of being hit by a passing vehicle due then stated she was nervous because her boyfriend was yelling at her.

Ashely was taken to jail.
