Man arrested for shooting flare gun another man

A 67-year-old Big Pine Key man was arrested Saturday for shooting another man in the arm with a flare gun.

Tomas Hernandez was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and improper discharge of a firearm/flare gun.

Deputies Anthony Buscemi, Sgt. Evan Calhoun, Christian Deen, Juan Martin-Reyes responded to the 29000 block of Canal Street on Big Pine Key at 5 p.m. regarding a man shot in the arm with a flare gun. They arrived to find the 57-year-old victim being treated by paramedics. The wound was not life-threatening.

People at the scene pointed to a boat dry docked on land. Hernandez was on the boat. Deputies ordered Hernandez out of the boat and detained him. Hernandez stated he and the victim have had issues with one another in the past. A flare gun shell was found on scene. Hernandez stated he subsequently dropped the flare gun in the water after the incident.

A witness stated they saw Hernandez shoot the victim in the arm with the flare gun.

Hernandez was taken to jail.
