Monroe County Public Works Replaces Worn Playground Equipment at Higgs Beach and Other Parks

KEY WEST, FL – Monroe County Public Works is replacing the worn playground equipment at Higgs Beach in Key West. Replacements include the slide, decking, safety barriers, and several other pieces of children’s playground equipment. The original equipment was placed at the beach in 2012 and due to showing signs of rust, the replacements were covered under manufacturer warranty.

“I am so glad to see that the equipment at Higgs Beach playground is being repaired and replaced as needed,” said Heather Carruthers, Monroe County Commissioner. “The park is a favorite for my children, as it is for so many others in the community. It’s a gem.”

In addition, Public Works has installed a new shade structure at Wilhelmina Park on Big Coppitt Key. New sand will be added to the park after the high king tides subside.

In Key Largo, Friendship Park is also having repairs and replacements take place. The park will receive a new shade sail, and new playground equipment, including the popular seahorse bouncing rider. A swing set will also be added.

“As we continue to deal with repairs from Hurricane Irma, it is important that we also improve and maintain our parks for the enjoyment of our residents,” said Willie DeSantis, Director of Monroe County Public Works.
