Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission proclaimed Red Ribbon Week
Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission have proclaimed the week of October 23rd to the 31st as Red Ribbon Week.
Established in 1988, Red Ribbon Week is focused on encouraging a drug-free lifestyle.
“Communities across America have been plagued by the numerous problems associated with illicit drug use,” read the proclamation.
The best way to win the war on drugs, it reads, lies in education and reduction of drug demand, coupled with the hard work of organizations such as the Young Marines of the Marine Corps League to foster a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
The red ribbon was chosen as a symbol commemorating the work of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent who was murdered in the line of duty. It represents the belief that one person can make a difference.
Police Chief Sean Brandenburg and Fire Chief Michael Davila accepted the proclamation.
