Three Monroe County-Owned Buildings Eligible for Historic Resources Disaster Supplemental Grant
MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County submitted three applications for funding from a $4.9 million Historic Resources Disaster Supplemental subgrant. The three County projects ranked in the top seven projects out of the 19 applications submitted statewide. The projects include repairs of the Key West Lighthouse roof for $138,932, Fort West Martello citadel repairs for $500,000, and foundation work for the historic Honeymoon Cottage and commissary that both need foundation work on Pigeon Key for $482,550. Damages to the historic properties stem from Hurricane Irma in 2017.
“Having our projects included in this grant helps the County move forward with continual Hurricane Irma recovery,” said Cary Knight, Director of Monroe County Project Management.
Other Florida Keys applications that were ranked included the Historic Florida Keys Foundation (ranked one), the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society, Florida Keys Land and Sea Trust/Crane Point, and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
The applications were reviewed by a five-member Hurricane Irma Subgrants Selection Committee appointed by the Florida Secretary of State. The applications are under final review by the National Park Service, and grant agreements are tentatively expected in November.
