Spike strips deployed after driver in pickup truck refused to stop

A 47-year-old Homestead woman was arrested early Monday morning after she fled from Deputies in the Upper Keys on U.S. 1.

Claudia Patricia Arango Castano was charged with fleeing and eluding.

Deputy Jose Hernandez was at Mile Marker 98 at 1:08 a.m. when he alerted other Deputies of a red, Chevrolet Silverado® pickup truck passed northbound that was unable to stay in its lane. Deputy Joel Torres saw the truck at Mile Marker 99 and followed it, noting that it drifted out its lane about two feet into the shoulder. Deputy Torres activated his emergency lights and siren, but the truck did not stop. The truck’s speed was roughly 45 mph.

Deputy Victor Morales set up spike strips at Mile Marker 106. They were successfully deployed. The truck stopped at Mile Marker 107. Arango Castano was taken into custody without further incident.

There were no injuries or high speeds reported.

Arango Castano was taken to jail.
