Key West Art & Historical Society to Present Documentary Film “Kevin Roche” The Quiet Architect”
On Tuesday, September 10, at 6:30pm, Key West Art & Historical Society will present “Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect” in the Helmerich Research & Learning Center at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.
A feature profile of the Pritzker Prize winning architect who passed away this year at 96 years of age, the documentary, directed by Mark Noonan and completed in 2017, considers architectural issues from Roche’s career, which spanned seven decades. Some of his best-known work includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Oakland Museum of California, the Ford Foundation and United Nations Plaza in Manhattan, A Centre for the Arts at the Wesleyan University, corporate campuses for Bouygues in Paris and Banco Santander in Madrid. Roche has also been the subject of special exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Architectural Association of Ireland in Dublin, and the American Academy of and Institute of Arts and Letters.
Noonan says, “This is not a film about rarified architectural theory. On the contrary, Roche’s ability to pierce the skin of architectural theory allows him to draw deep insights into his life and singular architectural process.”
Curated and hosted by Society board member and cineaste Michael Shields, the final film of the Society’s Summer Art Film is “Russian Ark,” a film that moves through 33 rooms of St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum and will be screened on September 24.
