New Key West Farmers Celebrates National Farmers Week
The 20th annual National Farmers Market Week (NFMW) is August 4 – 10th and highlights the important role farmers markets play in the nation’s food system. The new Key West Farmers Market will be celebrating Thursday, August 8 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Truman Waterfront.
According to the Farmers Market Coalition, markets strengthen regional farms and food businesses, promote ecological stewardship, improve food security, increase fresh food access, encourage community and social engagement, and facilitate urban and rural connection. Markets reconnect residents to the bounty of their region, sharing knowledge about seasonality and the variety of goods able to be made locally. Farmers markets cultivate “town squares,” giving civic and food initiatives an opportunity to engage with residents in a welcoming and inclusive manner.
The new Key West Farmers Market relies on growers from Homestead supplemented by producers and cultivators in the Keys to offer a well-rounded selection of pesticide-free produce, cheese, seafood, honey, pickles, roasted coffee, pastries and other pantry items. In addition, culinary delights from around the world are available for lunch and take-away at the eclectic pop-up food stalls. The market experience is complete with flea market finds and local arts and crafts.
Parking is free for residents and $4/hour for guests who can also ride the FREE Duval Loop which conveniently stops at the park.
