Mainland Florida couple rescued at sea

A Safety Harbor, Florida couple was rescued Wednesday night about 4.5 miles off Marathon in the Atlantic Ocean after a small boat began taking on water.

Sheriff’s Office Marine Deputy Wilfredo Guerra, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard Station Marathon all responded to the 5 p.m. call of a recreational 2001, 17-foot, white fiberglass Scout® boat with a blue bimini top that was taking on water on the Oceanside off Boot Key Harbor.

Edward Charles Gonsorek, 65, and Kim Marie Gonsorek, 64, were found on top of the overturned boat.

They were not seriously injured.

They were brought back to shore by the FWC.

Sea Tow® was called to salvage the boat.

What caused the boat to take on water is under investigation by the FWC.
