Distinguished Speaker Guest Magrane to present “The Merchant Ship of the 1622 Fleet” at Custom House Museum
On Thursday, June 27, from 6:00-7:00pm, Key West Art & Historical Society welcomes Distinguished Speaker Series guest Dr. Brian Magrane to the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street, where he will take his audience back in time with his presentation, “The Merchant Ship of the 1622 Fleet,” which centers on the “Buen Jesus y Nuestra Senora del Rosario,” a companion vessel of the larger treasure galleons “Nuestra Senora de Atocha” and “Santa Margarita.” Magrane will present what life aboard a small Spanish merchant ship was like, what was found on the wreck site, the coins and treasures that were recovered, and how the Atocha and Rosario differed.
An Islamorada-based physician and a coin collector since childhood, Dr. Magrane became interested in Florida’s sunken 1622 Fleet after acquiring his first shipwreck recovered coin, an 8 reales piece from the “Atocha” which then led to involvement in maritime heritage projects and treasure fleets research.
Distinguished Speaker Series presentation tickets are $5 for KWAHS members, $10 for non-members, and are available at kwahs.org/events. Early ticket purchase is recommended. Sponsored by the Helmerich Trust and Southernmost Beach Resort. For more information, contact Danielle Holliday at 305-295-6616 ext114. Your Museums. Your Community. It takes an Island.
