Found animal organs under investigation by FWC

A bowl of what appeared to be animal organs were found at the end of the Key Deer Boulevard at 8:51 a.m. Wednesday.

The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District reported finding the entrails to the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office then contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

It is not clear what animal the organs once belonged to, but Big Pine Key is home to federally protected species, such as Key deer, which prompted the Sheriff’s Office to contact the FWC to investigate further.

The remains have not be properly identified at this time. The organs will likely be identified with the help of a local veterinarian and the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The FWC is the investigating agency in the case.
