Chorale singers vote to remain at FKCC

To mix a couple of metaphors, the musical bouncing ball is now in the court of the Florida Keys Community College administration. The vote of current and former Keys Chorale members was, in a strong 56 to 23 decision, to remain at the college rather than to strike out on its own. The tally was reported by Nancy Barta, president of the group's Advisory Council last week.

 

     The group's decision, as ascertained by an on-line survey, was due to be given to the college by April 30. The vote affirms the wish to return to the status of a for-credit as well as a continuing education class, requiring a credentialed instructor with a degree or degrees—a master's is preferred—in vocal music. The most recent director, Dean Walters, has degrees that are not in the required subject area.

 

     “The information has been given to the College and now we await information as to whether there will be a mixed community chorus course offered this fall,” Barta wrote to past and present singers, adding, “Thank you so much for the love you have for this incredible group.”

 

      Neither FKCC Provost Brittny Snyder, who attended the Chorale's April 19 meeting and was direct and forthcoming in her remarks, nor Director of College and Public Relations Amber Ernst-Leonard, the official college spokesperson, could be reached for specific comment. However, College Counsel Shadrach Neiss, who wrote and signed the letter to past and present Chorale members setting the rules for continuing the relationship with the college, said that he imagined plans for the vocal music class would be addressed when plans for all other fall semester classes were finalized.
