The Key West High School varsity boys lacrosse team season was one for the books. The Conchs ended with a 10-7 record, with one of the wins being the district championship game. Not only were the boys district champs, the varsity girls lacrosse team also took home the title as well.

The boys team began at the high school five years ago, and through this time, they have had much success. Assistant Coach Alberto Garcia states, “We are at a point where the program has to put the most work and the biggest efforts to move forward, as we have won four district championships in a row. We have to be ambitious enough to raise next year’s goals and move forward.”

However, the season did not come without struggles. At the beginning of the season, they lost their first game. They also struggled with a streak of losing three games in a row before the boys left for spring break. “We had a unique season this year, difficult at times, but great at others. We experienced situations that humbled us, but those same situations also gave us the opportunity and the experience that we can overcome the very same things that went wrong, and it was through hard work and embracing the pain that came with that hard work,” Garcia explains.

Their regional game was against Gulliver Prep. Although the Conchs lost, they still showed their potential. The team, who practices every day, definitely showed their hard work. “This year we are practicing for two weeks ahead of the first tournament. We are also having three tournaments this year, which we never had done in the past. We just have to raise that work and the effort, keeping in mind that the stakes are just that much higher.”

The lacrosse team has become a town favorite through the past five years. Next season it is evident they will strive to become regional champs.  Now that their season is concluded, they will not practice together until next year, and the seniors will graduate. However, when next season comes, many feel the boys will not disappoint.
