Recent prison parolee arrested after foot chase

A 44-year-old Marathon man released from a Florida Department of Corrections prison on May 6, 2019 was arrested three days later on Thursday in Marathon.

The DOC issued violation of parole warrant for Kenyatta Eugene Scott who had just been released after a two-year sentence for battery on a law enforcement officer/firefighter/EMS. Scott has a prison history dating to 2013 for offenses ranging from robbery, battery and failure to register as a career criminal among others.

He was further charged Thursday with resisting arrest without violence and possession of drug paraphernalia — a crack cocaine pipe.

Sgt. Joel Slough spotted Scott at 6:39 p.m. in the area of 41st Street, gulfside, near Jesse Hobbs Park. Scott and his criminal history is known to Sgt. Slough. There were children playing in the park at the time.

Sgt. Slough requested additional Deputies respond. Scott began walking toward Sgt. Slough. Sgt. Slough ordered Scott to step in front of his patrol vehicle. Scott immediately turned his body in an attempt to conceal the left side of his body. Sgt. Slough drew his Taser® while placing himself between Scott and the children playing in the park. Sgt. Slough told Scott he would be shocked by the Taser® if he didn’t place his hands on the patrol car. Scott did not follow Sgt. Slough’s orders and continued to conceal the left side of his body. Sgt. Slough transitioned his Taser® to his left hand and drew his service gun with his right, believing at this time that Scott was attempting to produce a weapon. Scott then said something about how he can’t go back to jail before fleeing on foot. Sgt. Slough gave chase. Sgt. Slough deployed his Taser® but it had no effect on Scott, who continued to run.

Scott eventually slowed down after losing his footing near the 200 block of 41st Street and Sgt. Slough deployed his Taser® again. Scott attempted to run again when Sgt. Slough told Scott he would be shocked again if he did not comply and stop. Multiple Deputies and a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper converged on the scene whereupon Scott was taken into custody without further incident. Scott later stated he was high on crack cocaine and didn’t feel being shocked by the Sgt. Slough’s first Taser® deployment.

Scott was taken to jail where he remains under no bail.
