Naval Air Station Key West to Change Command June 6

Capt. Mark Sohaney will relieve Capt. Bobby Baker as Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Key West in a ceremony June 6 at 10 a.m. in Hangar A-936 on Boca Chica Field.

Baker has been at Key West for three years and will celebrate his 26-year Naval career during a retirement ceremony as part of the change of command.

Sohaney is reporting from the U.S. Pacific Fleet Director of Maritime Operations, where he was the Executive Assistant.

Sohaney’s previous duty assignments include flying the P-3C Orion and P-8A Poseidon with the “Golden Swordsmen” of Patrol Squadron (VP) 47, VP-30 “Pro’s Nest,” VP-9 “Golden Eagles,” and VP-26 “Tridents,” where he served as the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer. Sohaney then served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force P-8A Poseidon Fleet Introduction Team – heading the program for the introduction of the first new maritime patrol aircraft in over 50 years.

Sohaney has served on USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), deploying to the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He also served aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), forward deployed in Japan. Sohaney made multiple deployments to U.S. Fifth and Seventh Fleets – including one where he served as Multi-National Force-Iraq Liaison Officer in Baghdad in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Sohaney enlisted in the Navy in 1987, serving as a sonar technician. In 1993, he was selected for a commissioning program, and graduated in 1995 from San Diego State University. Sohaney was designated a Naval Flight Officer in May 1997. In 2007, Sohaney graduated from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, with a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.

Over his career, Sohaney has amassed more than 3,000 flight hours in the P-3C Orion and P-8A Poseidon.
