Reckless motorcyclist arrested
A 27-year-old Miami man on a motorcycle was arrested Saturday after fleeing from deputies on U.S. 1.
Michael Douglas Silva was charged with reckless driving and fleeing and eluding.
Upper Keys Deputy Matthew Koval was on patrol at 2:47 p.m. when he was called to Mile Marker 88.8 when he was informed that a man on a black motorcycle ran from a Florida Highway Patrol trooper. The trooper was involved in a minor crash attempting to stop the motorcyclist. The trooper did not suffer serious injuries.
Other deputies advised Deputy Koval the motorcyclist was traveling northbound at speeds of 100 mph or greater. Deputy Koval spotted the motorcyclist at Mile Marker 95 and activated his lights and siren. The motorcyclist accelerated faster upon seeing Deputy Koval and began weaving through traffic at speeds of 97 mph. Deputy Koval witnessed the motorcyclist nearly hit several cars he weaved through them.
The motorcyclist turned and looked at Deputy Koval several times. The motorcyclist started pointing at himself and appeared to be asking Deputy Koval if Deputy Koval wished him to stop. Deputy Koval answered yes. The motorcyclist stopped and pulled over.
The motorcyclist stated he was armed with a gun. Deputy Koval handcuffed the motorcyclist, identified as Silva, and disarmed him. Silva possessed a loaded 9mm Glock handgun. Silva did not display the gun during the incident.
Silva was taken to jail.
