Mainland men cited for undersized snapper
A Miami and Clewiston, Florida man were given notices to appear in court on Monday after they were caught with undersized Schoolmaster snapper.
Jonathan Barranco, 31, of Miami, and Oscar Lugo, 34, of Clewiston, were cited for possessing 11 undersized Schoolmaster snapper.
Upper Keys Marine Deputy Nelson Sanchez was on routine marine patrol at 3 p.m. on the oceanside of Indian Key Fill in Islamorada when he saw both men cleaning fish. The men said they caught and possessed some grunts and Lane snapper. The 20 fish they had identified as Lane snapper were actually Schoolmaster snapper. Eleven of the Schoolmaster snapper were shorter than the legally required 10 inches. The Schoolmaster snapper limit is 10 per angler. There is no size limit for grunts. Grunts have a bag limit of 100 pounds.
