Key West man has been sentenced to 28 months in Florida State Prison

A Key West man has been sentenced to 28 months in Florida State Prison to close out several probation-violation cases against him.

Felipe Medina, 36, was sentenced March 29 by Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Mark Jones after Medina admitted to violating probation in three separate cases.

In the first case, Medina sold $50 worth of heroin to a confidential informant working for the Key West Police Department. The controlled buy took place on April 27, 2017, and was captured on video.

In the second case, Medina drove without a valid driver’s license on June 30, 2017. The officer who was familiar with Medina from the previous investigation knew that Medina’s driving privileges were suspended and sought a warrant for his arrest for felony driving while license suspended.

Medina was arrested on both cases in September 2017. On June 14, 2018, he pleaded no contest in both cases and was sentenced to 30 months of probation.  He was also ordered to undergo outpatient substance-abuse treatment through the Offender Reentry Program.

Medina violated the terms of his probation in part by committing a new law violation. On August 29, 2018, a member of the public notified law enforcement that Medina, who was wanted by the police for having violated his probation, was in the area of Truman Avenue and Margaret Street. When police went to arrest Medina, he fled on his bicycle and led the police on a multi-block chase that ended when Medina crashed his bicycle into a patrol cruiser.

On November 29, 2018, Medina was sentenced to 36 months of probation on the new case. His probation on his other two cases for which he violated probation was extended by six months to run concurrent with the sentence in the new case.  He was also sentenced to enter and complete the House of Hope residential drug treatment program.

Medina most recently violated his probation by moving from his residence without the permission of his probation officer, unsuccessful completion of the House of Hope program and by failing to show up for scheduled tests to determine his drug and/or alcohol use.
