Health Department Hosts Full-Scale Special Needs Shelter Exercise

The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County facilitated a full-scale hurricane preparedness and Special Needs Shelter (SPNS) exercise, Tuesday, March 26 at the Gato Building in Key West.  Almost 80 participants representing different agencies were involved in the five-hour exercise, including Monroe County Emergency Management, Monroe County Social Services, Monroe County Public Works, and the American Red Cross.  This exercise took place to better prepare the department and community stakeholders during an emergency event.  The exercise allowed partners to identify and understand where improvements should be made, including communications and resources, and ensure the safety of staff members and clients during an emergency.   For more information about this exercise, contact the Exercise Director and Public Health and Medical Preparedness Program Manager, Ruth Kallay at (305) 676-3829.  To learn more about the special needs registry, visit: www.tinyurl.com/monroespns.
