Owen Honored for 30 Years of Service
Key West City Manager James Scholl, Fire Chief Michael Davila, and the City Commission on Wednesday honored Fire Capt. Wayne Owen for his 30 years of dedicated service to the City of Key West.
He started with the Key West Fire Department as a firefighter in February of 1989, and was promoted to Driver/Engineer in 2005. In 2011 he was promoted to Captain.
Capt. Owen “has provided great leadership and exceptional service,” said Chief Davila, “and is an example of what the Key West Fire Department stands for: Serving and protecting the citizens and guests of our island. He has worked his whole career to improve the quality of service our department provides to save lives and protect property.”
Capt. Owen served many years as the Secretary/Treasurer for the local 1424 International Association of Fire Fighters, improving the reputation of all Key West firefighters by being involved with youth sporting groups and other special events.
In addition to a plaque in honor of his service, City Commissioner Billy Wardlow – himself a retired Key West fire chief – presented Capt. Owen with a challenge coin commemorating 30 years of service.
Capt. Owen, who accepted the honor with his grandson Lucas in his arms, noted that he held the future of the fire department. He also hinted that retirement may not be far away.
The entire Department and the City thank him for his service.
