LETTER TO THE EDITOR / THE SHIP OF STATE IS OFF COURSE

Roger C. Kostmayer

What the President tells the American people, and doesn’t tell the American people, in our annual State of the Union address, is critical to understanding if our ship of state is on a proper course.

The list of what our President did not tell us is longer and more important than most of what he did – and it begins with the truths he did not tell. Fact checkers documented why the President has no credibility, with examples like his false abortion claims. Stunningly, there was no mention of the catastrophic Trump government shutdown, global warming, reasonable gun reforms or ripping asylum seeking families apart that are reported to be among the most urgent issues facing our nation and the globe.

Constitutional scholars will call the 2019 SOTU presentation the “Constitutional crisis speech” because Trump, like a mafia boss, threatened to prevent elected legislators from legislating if they pursued their Constitutional duty to oversee the executive branch. Think about that. Think about the implications for any democracy confronting a narcissistic dictator wanna be, or ask yourself if there’s any chance that an innocent person could say or do such things.

No SOTU speech in American history has ever more dangerously avoided the truth, failed to address existential threats and attacked our Constitutional foundations – all in a mostly boring 90 minutes. The response must be more truth, facts and sunshine that informs the public by legitimate and necessary legislative oversight. We must defend our freedoms and get our ship of state back on a proper course.
