LETTER TO THE EDITOR / ILLEGITIMATE ?

Roger C. Kostmayer

Evidence is piling up that the 2016 Presidential election was illegitimate because it was infected by criminality both by a foreign dictatorship and by the President and his cohorts.

In all of the investigations, indictments and evidence made public, the criminal intent was to put Mr. Trump in the White House by any means necessary, and to then exploit and pervert presidential power for financial and political gain.

It’s not yet clear to what extent the outcome of the election was changed due to foreign and domestic attacks on our elections system – but the criminal efforts were massive and sinister, and so were the results. The weapons used to steal our democratic process were lies, hateful propaganda, fear mongering, cyber warfare and massive use of social media. More than 160 million Americans were targeted and some number of them responded with disgust and decided not to vote. Some followed the evil intent by voting for Trump or against Clinton. Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million votes, but he won the Electoral College vote by 78,000 votes in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. There’s no question that the Russian attack, combined with the alleged criminal acts, had a significant impact, but it is not yet quantifiable as to exactly where, who and how many.

After Robert Meuller and the Senate submit the results of their investigations early next year, the Congress, Supreme Court and the American people will each face serious questions about our Constitutional democracy, like is a president above the law? Two other questions are: Is our current President illegitimate; and is a president who was elected by criminality and lies able to use the powers of the office illegally to remain in office without fear of indictments?

I know the answers the authors of our Constitution would give, especially if the president in question spent most of his time playing golf and texting.
