Larry Smith Holiday Jazz Concert December 14

Christmas comes early this year when pianist and composer Larry Smith returns to The Studios of Key West to present his fun and soulful take on holiday classics.

On Friday, December 14 at 8pm, joined by his longtime collaborators, bassist Joe Dallas and drummer Skipper Kripitz, Smith presents a holiday jazz concert with a fresh lineup of songs – including his original compositions. Smith’s wife and musical collaborator, vocalist Christine Cordone Smith, sings.

“Larry’s known as Key West’s very own ‘piano man,’” says Elena Devers, deputy director. “When he takes the stage you know you’re in store for a unique island experience!”

Smith’s musical vision is original and exhilarating, and his insistence on improvisation is a counterpoint to a meticulously rehearsed program. Classic songs become new again as Smith expands his arrangements beyond the normal envelope of safety.

“This year, instead of performing the Christmas songs traditionally, we are experimenting with merging them with electro, rock, dance, latin, and reggae grooves,” says Smith. “We have assembled an impressive lineup of guest singers and musicians. Hopefully, we’ll take you back to the joy of being a kid again. After all, isn’t that what the holidays are about?”

On-the-edge musical leadership is a normal for Smith, and by setting up a challenging terrain for his musicians to negotiate, he creates an experience for the audience that is fun, thrilling, and hopefully, spiritually moving.

Tickets are $30 General Admission and $25 for Studios’ members and can be purchased at The Studios of Key West’s box office, 305-296-0458, or online at www.tskw.org.
