LETTER TO THE EDITOR / AFTER THE DELUGE

Roger C. Kostmayer

The norm used to be that political winners were gracious, modest and called for unity in the name of common good. They almost always promised to listen to and serve every constituent equally regardless of how he or she voted. The losers licked their wounds, congratulated the victors, learned from their loss, and tried to handle their disappointment with grace.

By contrast, those who WON both the 2016 Presidential election and the bitter fight over Justice Kavanaugh’s nomination: sound like victims, are full of anger and division, demonize their opponents, and resort to fear mongering. It’s puzzling.

Let’s hope that the winners and the losers of 2018’s elections both revert to the uniquely American model of post election civility and cooperation. Because that’s who we are.
