FRINGE THEATER AND THE DRAMA CLUB PRESENT THE CRUCIBLE

Fringe Theater presents a free play reading of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible at 7pm on November 7th at the Old City Hall on Greene Street. The evening features the Key West High School Drama Club, under the leadership of Juliet Gray.

The Crucible is a Tony award-winning drama written during the Anti-Communist political hysteria that gripped the US in the 1950s. The play explores the dangers that result when people believe they alone possess absolute truth.

The play is set in the rigid Puritanical village of Salem, Massachusetts, during the late 1600s. Rumors that women are practicing witchcraft begin to circulate when a group of girls are found dancing in the woods. In the aftermath, the entire village becomes engulfed by panic and paranoia, pitting neighbor against neighbor and threatening to consume the entire community. 

“We were thrilled when Fringe Theater offered us a chance to showcase The Drama Club with a play reading. We decided to present The Crucible because it’s part of the school’s curriculum,” explained Juliet Gray, the Drama Club coach. “Studying a play for a performance is the best way to help students understand the play.”

The Nov 7th play reading is free. Donations will be collected at the door to support the Drama Club’s spring musical. The student cast of The Crucible includes Meghan Barter, Meaghan Bassett, Charlotte Berube-Gray, Leia Bryan, Vivian Carper, Sadie Dodds, Amanda Eppy, Ervin Gallo-Tumm, Kelci Grooms, Becca Maun, Scarlett McMonigle, Zoe Norman ,Mary Parks ,Nelson Sawyer, Daniela Valdez, Elyssa Walterson, and Jade Williamson.

“Fringe has evolved into a community-focused theater,” said Fringe Board President Janet Bengel. “This is the first of many events that have been planned to bring more of a focus to different components of our Key West community. We think it’s a great way to start our new season.”
