LETTER TO THE EDITOR / PROFILES IN COURAGE – OR COWARDICE

Roger C. Kostmayer

Judge Kavanaugh said the “most fundamental thing” for a judge is not to “be a jerk”. He explained that expression as: being biased, intemperate, arrogant, political, lacking credibility and respect from others. And those were the exact things most viewers saw when he testified and was bellicose, defensive, partisan and rude to the people’s Senators.

Based on their vote for or against promoting Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States, Senators Susan Collins (R), Lisa Murkowski (R), Heidi Heitcamp (D), Jeff Flake (R), and Joe Manchin )D) will go down in history as American heroes, or they’ll reinforce the public’s disgust with weak and selfish partisans.

Events and a deeply flawed process are happening at warp speed, but by Friday (10//5) two women Senators, Heidi Heitcamp and Lisa Murkowski (one Democrat, one Republican) courageously stood up to enormous pressure and said they would vote “no”. They follow in the footsteps of former Senator Margaret Chase Smith who, in 1950, was the only Republican to stand up to fellow Republican Senator and notorious abuser of power and innocent victims, Joe McCarthy. It took 4 more years before the male Republicans summoned the courage to do the same.

The question is, or was: will the other key Senators (Collins, Flake and Manchin) show the courage of strong and patriotic women like Senators M.C. Smith, Murkowski and Heitcamp; or follow the feckless men who waited 4 more years.

History will be an unforgiving judge.
